Batticaloa gets Rs 700 m bridge across Valaichchenai lagoon

Work on the new Oddamavadi bridge across the Valaichchenai lagoon is nearing completion and will be opened to the public this year. A Highways and Road Development Ministry spokesman said public transport in the Batticaloa district would be hassle free because of this bridge being constructed at a cost of Rs 700. million. Boost for coconut cultivation

Plantation Industries Minister D. M. Jayaratne will provide five coconut seedlings for 3.5 million families in the country. Under the program, 10 million coconut seedlings have already been distributed. Another 10 million coconut seedlings are also to be distributed in Divisional Secretary’s Divisions in next year. Sigiriya stays open despite wasp attack

Sigiriya will be opened to the public today despite Saturday’s wasp attack which injured several visitors, a Cultural Affairs Ministry spokesman said. Nearly 18 foreigners were injured by wasp stings at the rock fortress on Saturday. Other tourists who were at the summit of the rock at that time were evacuated immediately as a precautionary measure, OIC of the Sigiriya police said.

Panadura Provincial High Court Judge Malanee Gunaratne postponed the sentence for February 18 on the accused in the Film Star Dhammi Fonseka murder case. The accused Wickramage Padmasiri alias Tanthuwa of Kahatuduwa was found guilty of culpable homicide not amounting to murder. The accused was acquitted on the second count as he was not found guilty of committing the robbery of jewellery and cash from the actress’s possession. Schools for IDP children outside welfare centres

Over 2,000 IDP children living outside welfare centres were admitted to 59 schools in Vavuniya yesterday providing equal education access for all. The Government took this decision after receiving a number of complaints that the children of IDP families who are living with their relations outside the welfare centres have been denied school education. Northern Governor Major General G.A. Chandrasiri said another 2,000 children deprived of school education would be admitted to Gamini Maha Vidyalaya in Vavuniya tomorrow. Lanka to produce own thyroxine

Sri Lanka will produce its entire requirement of Thyroxine tablets from next month. The State Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Corporation (SPMC) will produce the first consignment of Thyroxine tablets which will be distributed among all State hospitals and to the market, a Healthcare and Nutrition Ministry spokesman said. According to the spokesman, the total annual Thyroxine requirement of Sri Lanka is 24 million tablets.

Saudi gives Rs 5,332M for Kaluganga project

Saudi Arabia will fund Saudi Riyal 172 million (Rs. 5,332 million) for the construction of a dam in Sri Lanka, which will be the highest grant offered to the island since 1981. A four-member delegation headed by Agriculture Development and Agrarian Services Ministry Secretary A. Amarasekera arrived here Sunday to prepare the draft agreement which would include the technical details of the project. The agreement will be signed in Colombo. “This is the seventh financial facility offered by the Saudi Fund for Development (SFD) for infrastructure development in the country,” SFD Project Director Abdullah Al Shedokhi told the Daily News.

Govt allocates Rs 500m for dengue fight

The Government has allocated Rs 500 million this year to control dengue. This amount was Rs 50 million last year. A task force will also be appointed to 65 MOH divisions identified as high risk areas, Health Services (Public Health), Deputy Director General, Dr Palitha Maheepala said. According to Dr Maheepala, the ministry appointed 40 assistant entomologists to assist the dengue control program and a special inter sectoral coordinating committee has been appointed under the chairmanship of the Secretary to the President Lalith Weeratunga. The number of dengue cases reported this year is over 2,500 while the number of deaths so far is 20.
